At a well attended meeting in Towcester Town Hall on Saturday morning, local Liberal Democrat members met to select their prospective parliamentary candidate for the 2015 general election.

Following a speech to members followed by a comprehensive question and answer session Scott Collins was unanimously reselected to represent the party in the 2015 general election.

Scott told members

“With the success we have had since 2009, with an excellent set of County Council election results, 2010 moving into 2nd place in the general election with a 4% rise in our vote. Then on to 2011 returning 2 Lib Dem district Councillors to South Northants Council, 2012 a landslide victory to take the Towcester county division with a 30% swing against the Conservatives and adding another district Councillor and finally retaining one County Councillor whilst gaining another county Councillor in the 2013 elections. We can, and must, continue our success through this years Euro elections and onwards to the 2015 district and general elections.”

Commenting further Scott said

“As a party we have so much to be happy about being in coalition, not the fact we are working with a party who are still diametrically opposed to us in so many ways but the real important work we have done in delivering some real changes for the better in making life fairer and better for many. We have delivered the pupil premium, supporting children through school giving them the extra help they need, The Triple Lock Guarantee on pensions ensuring the insult of the 75p pension rises under Labour will never happen again and finally the changes to income tax thresholds lifting millions of the lowest paid workers out of tax altogether and saving up to £700 a year for millions of other.

We need to ensure that voters understand who delivered these changes. David Cameron famously told Nick Clegg in the TV debates in 2010 that the tax changes were ‘unaffordable’ and ‘Impossible’. Yet Tory politicians desperately still claim credit for policies they have spent their history opposing driven by dogma rather than common sense and reality.”

Scott Collins spoke after the meeting

“I am so proud to have been reselected to represent the Liberal Democrats in 2015 but our work starts now to ensure we support and campaign for, Bill Newton Dunn MEP and our European Team, Issan Ghazni, Phil Knowles, George Smid and Deborah Newton-Cook for the European elections in May.
